In a polarised world, I seek entry points for contemplating conflict and divisions. How does schooling contribute to the development of polarised viewpoints?
I immersed myself in artistic research, meditating on my personal relationship to the teaching of competing historical interpretations. I focused on the three mutually exclusive, competing historical narratives taught to primary school children in Bosnia and Herzegovina since the 1990s war. I collected History school textbooks, and played with their content to make paper collages, exhibited as a solo show titled "Into Which Narrative Was I Born?" at the History Museum of BiH in Sarajevo, from 7th July until 31 August 2023, and as part of the international conference "Why Remember?", organized by the Peace and Conflict Culture Network.
My artistic research developed into a web conversation platform titled "Into Which Narrative Was I Born?", exploring personal experiences of learning about History worldwide. I interpreted the experiences of my interlocutors as condensed sound-collages, inviting active, mindful listening. To access these audio works, please click here.
My peer-reviewed chapter, examining the teaching of competing histories at schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), is published on this link.
